Infiniti M to do battle with 5 Series and E Class

ore information has been released about the Infiniti M, set to launch in the UK from September 2010, as it looks to square up to the likes of the BMW 5 Series, Jaguar XF and Mercedes Benz E-Class in the executive saloon class.

First impressions of the car are very impressive – with its distinctive and classy aesthetics – the car is a departure from the normal executive saloon. To the benefit of both performance and efficiency, the M is excellent at slicing through the air. Its drag coefficient is only 0.27 and the body has been designed for zero lift at the front and rear for increased high speed stability. As with other Infiniti models, the M is equipped with lightweight aluminium doors, bonnet and boot lid (as well as an all-alloy V6 engine).

The M37 is powered by the 3.7-litre VVEL V6 petrol engine also used in other Infiniti models. All alloy and of tried and trusted motor racing-style ladder-frame construction. The engine develops 320 PS (316 bhp) and 360 Nm (266 lb ft) of torque. Standard on every M is Infiniti’s seven-speed Adaptive Shift Control (ASC) automatic transmission – complete with Downshift Rev Matching (DRM) and Drive Sport (DS) mode for full manual control via the available solid magnesium shift paddles behind the steering wheel. Performance data is yet to be confirmed. Also available with a V6 diesel powerplant, details of this engine will be revealed nearer the launch.

Infiniti are hoping to differentiate themselves from the crowd by offering an impressive array of new technologies on the car, these include:

• Blind Spot Intervention (BSI) – the car using radar can detach a car in another lane and can warn or even begin to move the car back into its original lane should the car start to move into the problem area.
• Active Noise Control (ANC) – this promises to be a very clever piece of kit. The system can identify unwanted sounds within the cabin and dampen them by playing sound waves through the speakers of the opposite frequency – helping to cancel out the noise. The system is aimed at reducing undesirable low-frequency engine sounds only. M models with the 16-speaker Bose Studio Surround sound system are equipped with Bose Engine Harmonic Cancellation (EHC) which is even more effective at controlling unwanted noises.
• Infiniti Drive – four driver-selectable modes available via a switch positioned behind the gear lever: Standard, Eco, Sport and Snow settings.
• Forest Air – is promising to be a high performance climate control system which also introduces subtle hints of the forest to promote alertness!

2010 promises to be a big year in the executive saloon market with an all new BMW 5 Series also entering the market.

BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo Launched in Hong Kong

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo made its first public appearance in Hong Kong when it poked its head out at the Spasso Bar in Harbour City. Held earlier this month, the event marked the launch of the model in Hong Kong. A multitude of big names attended, such as the Taiwanese artist Ethan Juan and celebrity models Marie Zhuge and Jessica C. Other prominent figures included the respected director Louis Tan and the famous Chinese-American singer Adrienne Lau.

Amidst the hubbub of canapés, jazz and dance troupes, the focal point remained the new set of wheels on display. The four-door, five-seater Gran Turismo is the first ever made by the German manufacturer, and it combines a decent interior space with a plunging, coupe-like roofline design. As a result they’re marketing it as a chameleon vehicle that can wear the label of business, leisure or sports car depending on your mood. We’ll have to wait and see whether the Gran Turismo lacks a sense of purpose in what is already an overcrowded marketplace.



Two versions of the Gran Turismo will be made – the 535i GT and the 550i GT. The former features a brand new motor, a BMW TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line engine, which propels the 535i GT to 100km/h in 6.3 seconds. In contrast the most powerful model of the 550i GT stomps around with a 407 hp BMW TwinPower Turbo V8 engine under the bonnet. It will reach 100km/h in 5.5 seconds and glugs just 11.2 litres of fuel per 100 km. The Gran Turismo operates with an 8-speed automatic transmission and comes with a large panorama roof that allows you to gaze at the night-sky. When you’re not driving. Finally, the car also offers a two-part luggage system, making it easy to load everything from a pack of batteries to a set of golf clubs.

The BMW 5 Series is a mid-size / executive car manufactured by BMW since 1972. The car, now in its fifth generation, is sold in sedan and touring body styles.

The 5 Series got its name by being the fifth of the "new series" cars after the V-8 and Isetta era. The preceding models were the 700, the "New Class", the "New Six" 2500/2800/Bavaria and the CS. The 5 Series was intended to replace the older New Six sedans.

The body was styled by Marcello Gandini, based on the Bertone 1970 BMW Garmisch 2002ti Geneva show car. Gandini also did the Fiat 132 and Alfa Romeo Alfetta, two other cars that have a similar design.

There have been five generations of the 5 Series to date. To differentiate between them, they are referred to by their unique chassis numbers (EXX).

The 5 Series began the BMW tradition of being named with a three-digit number. The first digit (5 in this case) represents the model, and the following two digits (usually) represent the size of the engine in decilitres, which is the main distinguishing difference. Additional letters or words may be added to the end of the three-digit number to define the fuel type (petrol or diesel), engine or transmission details, and the body style. The 'i' originally stood for (fuel) 'injection'.
